It is the Oregon Star. My little town of 600 people is the walking capital of the world. I can sit on my front porch and visit with so many people who walk by daily. I am one of the walking many. What's so funny is only one person knew that this had to do with quilting. Everyone else asks "What is that?"
She made me 'Snowflakes'. Beautiful Snowflakes to put on my Christmas tree for next year and every year after!! They are absolutely gorgeous!!

I'm using my cell phone to take the pictures, I just tried using my new 'IPad 4' but I cut off portions of the Snowflakes, so I'll try and use the best pictures. They are prettier than the pictures show.
Aren't they the sweetest 'Snowflakes' you've ever seen? Isn't Barb the nicest friend in the whole wide world? I think I have two of them turned around! Oh no!! I am too tired to go take more pictures.

And this is the second time she has 'made' me something. I showed you the table runner I have on my kitchen table! Well, if you didn't see it, scroll down a ways and you will see it. I won it (plus a bunch of other people) on her blog! I am so lazy. I don't make gifts for people to win. I give fabric. That's the lazy way. She actually takes her time and makes gifts and gives them to complete strangers! What a nice, decent person she is. I love her to death!! I want to be more like her. When I start sewing again, I will try.

Thanks Barb for the 'Snowflakes'. I will take very good care of them. And since it snowed heavily here today, I couldn't take down the tree, so the 'Snowflakes' will go with my other ornaments for next year.

Now to go read my new quilting books. I received a quilting novel for Christmas from my niece and it is so delicious! I started reading it and loved it, so I ordered the second one and then I ordered about 5 more in the series. They are big paperback books. The size of hardbacks. I'm not using Kindle on these. I love the feel of a book. And these books need to be read the old fashioned way. They are the "Elm Creek Quilt" series. There are 16 books in the set and then there are, I think, three quilt books. Books that have patterns from the novels. I will be purchasing them soon. They talk about the quilts they make, so it would be so cool to make those exact quilts! The second book is called 'Round Robin' and I didn't know what a Round Robin was. Well, now I do. I don't think quilters do that much anymore. Maybe they do. I don't hang around groups of quilters, so I don't know, but it is such a neat idea!

The first book is called 'The Quilter's Apprentice'. Check it out. After you read the first page, you are addicted. The first book is very wholesome. I like that. The second book gets juicy!! The third book (which I am reading now) is even juicier!!! I never thought I would read a quilting novel! Never! But the writer is an excellent writer. She has written other novels, great novels in fact, so don't discount her! Give her a shot. Her name is Jennifer Chiaverini. She has a webpage. It is www.elmcreek.net. Check her out!

Barb said she can't download pictures on her blog anymore. That's why I came to my blog today - to see if I could and report back to her. Well, I can, so I need to tell her this. You should check out her blog. I posted it above in the previous blog. You'll love it and her! Now to go read my novel!
And when I finally got the latches opened, here she is - my new 401 Slant-O-Matic Singer Sewing Machine. I learned how to sew on one just like her. When my mom died, my dad gave her to me. I kept her for years, but then traded her in for a very basic mechanical Viking Huskavarna that my daughter has. How stupid I was. It was worth more than the Viking was. I had to fork over $$$ plus the machine to get the Viking. And the Singer had her own stand! Pictures aren't the greatest, sorry!
She's in perfect shape. No scratches or dings. She's been gone through by the best. She's just wonderful. I'm going to use her for retreats and classes.

Now, since there are great sales going on, I've been going a little nuts! Here are some of my purchases. This first bunch is not really a sale. It's a BOM from 'Fat Quarter Shop'. It's their "Christmas Favorites" BOM. It started in September, so they sent me 4 blocks to catch up. That's not a good sign for me. I get overwhelmed and then I tend to not do it. I don't think that is going to happen with this super cute quilt though. Here is the HUGE box that came Friday for me. I couldn't wait to open it!
This is what the quilt will look like when I am done with it. This is the pattern! I was going to take each month's block out and show you the cute fabric, but I don't want to have to put the fabric back in each package, so I'll show you just the outside of each month. Here is month one:

There are buttons galore! And ribbons and embroidery floss and lots of cute fabric! This is for all the months. They just put all of it in the first month's block.

This is block 2. It has 6 different fabrics. I should have opened them, dang!
Okay, block 3 now.

It also has 6 different fabrics. They are very cute. You can make them out on the printed paper on the outside of the package. On to the block four.

Block four has 12 different fabrics. I haven't opened the pattern yet, so I don't know what any of the blocks are. This has got to be the big daddy of all the blocks. I still have a big package of batting that looks very similar to this fabric. I love when I get the backing at the beginning of the BOM class.

They are having such awesome sales after Christmas that I've been buying things almost daily. Here are some of the things that have come in. I'm expecting things daily still. I ordered from three places today. I ordered a scarf, not quilting, and two cute winter hats, not quilting either, but I did order from Missouri Star Quilting Co. today. I bought a charm pack for $1 and 3 1/2 yards of fabric to go with this jelly roll. You can't just have a jelly roll...you need sashing and borders! Here's the roll:

It's Fairy Tale Friends. I don't ever buy anything with critters on it. Well, I take that back. I did buy owl fabric. But besides that, I don't buy kids fabric, Halloween fabric, just starting to buy Christmas fabric and wanting to buy Valentine fabric, and have camping fabric and old timey fabric with moms and dads and kids camping. I'm starting to venture out. I don't have flannel except for the raggedy quilt that is cut out and batting is inside each piece and it's all ready to have an 'X' sewed on each sandwich. That's all the flannel I have and I have so much fabric. And I don't have much batik, either. I'm just starting to like that.

Okay, I purchased this tiny tool kit for my sewing machine and love, love, love it!!! It zips shut and tucks away. It's awesome!
It has a flathead screwdriver, a phillips head screwdriver, some kind of rachet (sp?) thingie and another tool I don't really know what it is, but I still love them all equal!! ha

Here's some pink I picked up! I don't have much pink, so I just bought a little bit for 'just in case'.
And behind it is a fat quarter bundle of Kaffe Fassett. It was wrapped in plastic and it had the name of the fabric line on it, but I threw it away without thinking. I don't care for Kaffe Fassett fabric usually. I've talked it over with my LQS owner and she agrees with me. We just don't get him! But somehow, I bought this. I might be having a giveaway!!!
I think his fabric is just too wild for me! I know I didn't know who's fabric line it was that I was buying, because I would never spend that kind of money on his line! I decided his fabric looks like the bedspreads in motels. Sorry Kaffe,

I bought this from Joann's. It has so many uses. You can take it when you go to the quilt store and put whatever you are going to buy into it. You can take it to the store and use it there. I am going to use it to keep my project in. I love it!
It's a nice big size. I could put 2 or 3 quilt kits in there - queen size. And I got it at a ridiculous price! They almost gave it to me!!

I bought this 'Creative Ideas' carryall to hold my scissors and pencils and rotary cutters. I haven't had the time to fill it. I just stuck a few of my scissors in it for effect. I love the purple. It's very heavy duty.
And yes, I want to 'Quilt with the Stars'. So I bought another quilt kit. It's so darling! I pulled out the fabric and barely pulled them apart for you to see them.
Pretty fabric, isn't it?

And look at the HUGE button that comes with it!!! It's going to be cute!!!

And lastly, I ordered this bit of fabric to go with some precut I can't find. I know that is what I did because sometimes I order a jelly roll on sale or a layer cake or charm pack and then when I get it, I look through it and find two fabrics that I want for sashing and borders. Well, it doesn't look like I looked through whatever precut I bought because these are pretty bland fabrics. I need to read what fabric line they are and then go searching for the precut. Usually I leave the precut sitting out until the fabric comes in, and then put it all together. I didn't this time and I figure it's going to be a long time till I find that precut that these two pieces of fabrics go with. It looks like I ordered 2 yards of each. Here they are, bland and all:
The one with the model in a bathing suit in the ocean is a video, so click on that, but I don't think the other two are videos, but check them out also...they are great!! http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/moments-that-restored-our-faith-in-humanity-this-yJeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08205233421891347959noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4852617299674637568.post-30487783624371970862012-12-19T10:18:00.001-08:002012-12-31T10:35:18.574-08:00I found an awesome blog!Rachael Wetzler loves yellow! She is such a great quilter. Check out her blog site.
www.rachelwetzlerquilts.blogspot.com

I picked up my 6 quilts from the LQS yesterday. The owner did the binding on all six of them for $190. Way less than she told me it would cost me. Here are some pictures of the machine binding she did. They are awesome. She wanted to hand bind them, but I told her I needed them in a hurry and they were never going to be judged, so just machine bind them. Here they are:

This is my Civil war block of the month quilt. It is king size. She did a flange on the binding. You can see the blue with red spots on the binding and then the red strip just inside it? That's the flange, the red stripe. That's her binding. I love it. This is going to my husband for Christmas. It has wool batting. It will keep him "oh so warm!"

Scallops!! She did scallops!! Isn't it cute? You kind of have to look hard to see it. When I get my Ipad with Retina for Christmas, my pictures will be 100 times better, but for now, this is what you've got. I'm giving this quilt, which is huge, to my 16 year old niece instead of $50 cash.

This one is awesome! I love that word. I know they used it in the 90s. Overused it. But it says what I mean. And the long arm stitching on this matches what she did to her machine binding. It looks like dashes ----- like that!!

This is for my 13 year old niece for Christmas. It has sheep, chicken, swans, and calves on it. She did a flange on it, also. The green gingham at the edge is the binding and then there is a red color that is the flange, right before the brown and white checkered fabric. I think she will like this. My husband wanted to give his niece's each a $50 bill, but I am giving them each a twin size quilt that was long armed. Worth so much more than the $50.

This is one of my favorite quilts. I am not giving it away. I am keeping it. I don't know why, but I love the colors and the boxes. It was easy to make and the fabric just speaks to me.

I know, not great pictures, but what can I do? I decided I wanted an Ipad for Christmas instead of a Nikon camera. But the Ipad with Retina is suppose to take great pictures, so we'll see if it does. I need to take pictures of all of my quilts I've made.

There is only one that I can't take a picture of and that is one I gave to my ex-older brother. He refuses to believe I am even alive. The day my dad died, he thinks I died also. He won't take my calls or reply to my letters. So I am dead to him and I can't get a shot of the quilt I gave him - he probably donated it to Goodwill anyway. Oh well, such is family life.

So, I'm busy with Christmas and my son coming home, so I won't be writing for a bit. I received one email from a participant from the quilt kit giveaway saying she received my kit. One gal wrote and said she hadn't received her's yet. Oh, the postal office. I hope you all get yours today. Merry Christmas!
Barb of http://whisperofrose.blogspot.com/ had a Giveaway a little bit back and I won! Well, quite a few people won. And she made Table runners as prizes!! She actually did the hard work! She sewed a bunch of Table runners and gave them all away. I saw pictures of some of them and they were all awesome but I think mine was the best!

I found a website where this gal made some fabric that was shoes and I wanted the fabric so much! It was expensive and I couldn't really afford it. I wrote her. She wrote me back. Last night she offered me a deal of a lifetime on two Shoe Panels. I took it!! I'm getting my shoe fabric. It's close to the fabric that Barb put in this table runner.

Here is a close up of the table runner so you can see how nice and cute it is.

She couldn't have picked a better runner for me. I love dots. I love black and white! I love the green in the shoes. I see now that my shoe panels that are coming that the shoes are different colors. Looks similar. Funny how I found that site and wanted the fabric and then Barb sends me a runner with shoes! Thank you Barb! It fits perfectly in my kitchen on my oak table!! One last picture!

Those two letters are Christmas cards with Visa cards for my kids. It's so they can buy Christmas gifts (my daughter can buy something for her husband and he can buy something for her) (my son can buy his girlfriend a gift and maybe someone else or himself something. I did that last year because I remembered when my kids were little how I had no extra money for Christmas presents and we had to figure which bills didn't get paid in December so the kids received presents. I figured I wanted my kids to have money to splurge and buy presents at Christmas time. When they have kids, I'll make sure they have loads of cash for their kids. Christmas is so important for kids. And my kids are still my kids...even though they are adults! I still remember them as 8 and 10 years old. I always will remember them at that age and younger.

Thank you Barb for the Table runner! I absolutely love it!!
I found a few more quilt kits today to be given away next Friday, Dec. 14th. Just leave a comment saying which ones you like. I don't have many followers so it's likely that anyone that leaves a post will receive at least one (most likely a few) kits. So go through these and then go down a couple of posts and look at those and leave comments on the ones you would like. Tell me if you want a few or just one. Doesn't matter to me. You are not being greedy. I am giving them away. Even my old friend from along time ago, Barbara Corbitt, is invited to comment on them. Good luck.

Here's the first new one I found today:

This is a pretty fancy get up. I've never seen one like this. It's felt with embroidery floss and other items with it.

Next:

This is a really big (my husband is holding this up above his head and it goes below his knees) panel and comes with coordinating fabric. There is no pattern. I guess you just figure it out yourself. I am not that gifted. Here is some of the coordinating fabric:

I should have spread it out more. There is quite a bit there. I guess we can call this the "Summery House" panel, if you want it. It would be so cute when it's done!

This next one is so pretty and delicate. The fabric is lovely! Here is the pattern. It's kind of light and hard to see, but it's very pretty and the fabric below is so so pretty.

This is called "Garden Arbor".

And this last one I bought at my local quilt shop. She had a boy's quilt and a girl's quilt. I knew my niece was going to have a boy because she took a home pregnancy test that was 80% correct and told her she was going to have a boy. Wrong! It was a girl and she lost it when she was 4 1/2 months pregnant. So sad. Anyway, this brings up painful memories for me and it was very expensive, but I don't think I could ever bring myself to make it, so I am giving it away. It's a big quilt. Not a baby blanket, at all.

And, I swear to you, I took it straight on, not sideways! Every once in a while, my cell phone camera will have a mind of its own and turn the picture sideways. Well, It's brown and blue, I think, and has bunnies appliqued along the top. It's called Bunny Hugs.

Okay, you can leave comments here or down below where I have photos of the other quilt kits I'm giving away. Remember, I usually get 3 people write in only and I would like to give these all away, so name the ones you like. If you like them all, say so. Because when Friday runs around and no one likes a few of these, I don't know what to do with them. I guess I could have another giveaway, but I'd rather not. If I found a giveaway and they said I could ask for all of them, and I wanted all of them, I'd ask for all of them, really! Because they said it was A-okay! And it is.

So there you have it. I might do a little more cleaning and run into another couple of kits and if I do, I post them and you can comment on them also. Christmas is coming and I'm in the spirit.

It use to be that I had one quilt I was working on and when that one was done, I'd go out and buy myself fabric and a pattern or a quilt kit. Only had one at a time. Then I started aquiring them and now I am so overwhelmed with them that I can't decide which quilt to do next, so I usually turn off the light and leave the room. Too much for me. I can't decide. I want to get back to having less. Less is more to me. I mean, I love having a stack of Kona solids and some fabric lines and some quilt kits, but this is ridiculous when there are quilters out here that could use some of these kits and they've just been sitting on my shelves for a long time. I have quilt guilt!!! It feels bad!!

So, help me feel good again! I gave a box of kits away to a gal and the day I did, I found out that I won a homemade table runner!! What goes around comes around! I received it in the mail today. It is so darn cute! I will take a picture of it tomorrow after I iron it. It's 8 pm and I'm too tired to plug in the iron and take everything off the old ironing board.

But I'm hoping something nice happens to someone close to me by giving all this away. Someone close to me is having a big problem and I'm trying to make that "goes around comes around" go around to that person by doing this!

Good night!! Leave a comment, please!
Not one, but three!! I am so not computer savvy that I am suppose to grab their button and put it in my sidebar, but my sidebar refuses to let me put it their. Go figure. So, I am going to try and put it here. I have tried before and it didn't work. All that came out were letters and numbers, not the fancy button. Okay, here goes...I'm trying:
I will announce the winners next Friday, December 14th.
I gave away some quilt kits to a very nice gal on The Quilting Board and had quite a few gals asking if I had any more left. So I told them I would have a giveaway on my blog. So, here's what I have left over to giveaway to 2 lucky winners. I will make up 2 parcels and send them out on Monday December 17th, if I hear back from the winners before then. If I don't, I'll pick new winners. So please, make sure I can get ahold of you on picking day and that you respond to me with your address promptly so you don't miss out.
Now, let me go get my trusty cell phone and take some pictures of my quilt kits I'm offering as gifts!!!
This awesome kit came from my local quilt shop about 3 years ago. The top picture is the pattern and the bottom is obviously the fabric. It is going to make a beautiful quilt. This kit cost quite a bit of money. It is pieced and appliqued both.
I think there are three panels in this kit and loads of fabric to make a quilt. I never received a pattern for it. There's striped fabric for borders and just beautiful fabric all around. I am hesitant to give this away, but don't know when I'll find the time to do this.

About an hour ago my mail lady rang my doorbell with a box full of packages for me. Oh no, my husband was asleep. It woke him up. He got home in the middle of the night off a train. And he didn't appreciate all the packages she brought me like I did. So, yes, I need to unload some of my kits regardless.
Also, I bought these two log cabin kits from ebay...already cut out and ready to be sewed. They are shrink wrapped.
So, I don't have many followers at all and to win all you have to do is leave me a comment saying why you would like to win a few of these quilt kits. That's it. I'll check back Dec. 14th and declare two winners. Good luck.

I found a couple more kits today while cleaning my sewing room. I didn't have time to take pictures, but I'll try to later. I am giving more than one kit to a person. Maybe 3 or 4 per person.
I sewed all the sashing to my 20 blocks and sewed the borders on the Craftsy BOM yesterday! Finally!!!! Then I took the ugliest fabric ever and "ripped" the selvages off and sewed the two pieces together and ironed the seam open and ironed both the top and the back. I clipped any stray thread. I did my best.
I know you aren't suppose to make your backing into two pieces with the seam going down the middle. Call the quilt police! I can take them on!! After what I've been through with my binding, I can take anyone on!!! I've been to hell and back and lived to tell!
Well, maybe not tell the quilt police. I might end up just sobbing and blubbering to them. Too shameful!
Here's my top. Not the best light. It was late night by the time I was finished.
Oh my, they are terrible. My husband was holding the quilt and I was trying to hurry because he needed to go to bed because he works for the railroad and he's on-call and needed as much sleep as possible before they surprise called him, so I snapped these babies and didn't realize I cut off the bottom of the first one and the top of the second one. I will retake these when he comes back from Idaho.
This is my first scrappy quilt I ever made. And it's not a true scrappy quilt. It's all from one design line. I bought a fat quarter bundle, just like Amy Gibson, the teacher, and then became worried that I would run out of fabric and ordered another fat quarter bundle.
Well, if you've ever bought a fat quarter bundle, you know they cost close to $100. And I used one little piece of the second bundle. So I have to find something to make with this bundle. I love the fabric so much!!!!
Amy Gibson is teaching a Block of the Month at her website: www.stickorydickorydock.com next January. It cost less than $8 for the whole year. It won't be a video like this one was, but for $8, who cares.
She's using Kona solids, fat quarter bundle of them. I have that! And she is using a couple of yards of solid grey. I have that. I am set to go!!
I heard that Craftsy.com is doing another free BOM this coming January again. I will be there for sure! And I will buy the same fabric the teacher uses, unless I can't stand it.
I met a gal on "The Quilting Board" www.thequiltingboard.com, who was doing the Craftsy BOM and using the same fabric as I and we became fast friends. We found out that we were "Country Cottages" together also. We are fast friends now. We talk daily on The Quilting Board. We are so alike, except she is gung ho at quilting. She spends hours every day sewing, where I don't. My machine is not working, so I am not sewing. Even when it's working, I don't spend as much time sewing as she does.
I need to clean my sewing room!!!! My husband said I could have the dining room to sew in also. WOW! I could put my sewing cabinet in there, my ironing dresser, and my 23x70 cutting mat on two tables in there. It would free up so much room in my sewing room! I am going to take him up on that.
I am so excited. But, he said I have to figure out what to do with the dining room table and chairs. I know. Put them in the shed with the snow tires and riding lawn mower. Problem solved.
Yippee!!! Now I need my brother to come out and help move things around!
Oh oh, my 17 year old blind deaf dog is barking. He's hungry. I better go take care of him. Until later...peace!
It's here: http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2012/11/easy-street-monday-link-up-1.html

It's called Easy Street! This is what I have to do:
Cut 2” strips from background and whatever you are using as the grey.
My backgrounds are the black-on-white prints. I can’t tell you how many
strips to cut because scrap lengths vary. You will need enough strip
sets to cut 384 2” twosie sub-cuts. Match the twosies together and sew 192 4-patch units. As you are
sewing, pay close attention to how these are feeding through the
machine. I send my pairs through all with the DARK SQUARE leading. This
keeps the seam on the bottom going "with" the feed-dogs instead of
"against" them so I don't get flipped seams from underneath. It also
helps keep that opposing seam junction nice and tight as I sew over it.

Why be consistent? So we can pinwheel the seams on the back side all in
the SAME DIRECTION instead of having some of them go clockwise, and
some go counter clockwise…

Okay, that's step one. OMG! 192 4-PATCH UNITS!!! That is a lot to do just for the first step. I need to find enough fabric to do this. She is using grey and white. I need to buy some more grey.

Off I go treasure hunting...Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08205233421891347959noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4852617299674637568.post-62027019076403067602012-11-19T17:28:00.003-08:002012-11-19T17:35:31.631-08:00Binding BluesI finally bound a quilt. It looks horrible. It's my 2nd try. I will not publish a picture of it because I am so embarrassed. I called Dawn at Tradition's Quilts and told her I was bringing in 8 quilts to be bound. She said OK. I told her I needed 3 by Christmas and the rest any time.
So, tomorrow I'm loading up my Hummer and taking all 8 quilts and the fabric for the binding to my LQS so she can find people to bind them. I said machine bind them. I don't care. They have been sitting around for over a year and I want them done.
My Bernina 830 will not sew with anything but 50 wt. thread. What is up with that? You can't find 50 wt. in small spools. You have to buy cones. So how can I machine bind a quilt? I want to use the same color as the binding and I can't. I need to go to my dealer and have them show me how a $10,000 sewing machine will work with 40 wt. thread when I can't get it to.
It breaks after a couple of stitches. Every time!!!! I do maybe a half an inch and the thread pops. The thread gets really tight and pops! How do I fix that? Any ideas? I would love you forever if you could help me. Is it the tension? Do I go up or down on the tension?
H.E.L.P. M.E. please!!!!!!!Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08205233421891347959noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4852617299674637568.post-47537431279403700342012-10-13T10:08:00.001-07:002012-10-13T10:18:19.316-07:00Funniest blog I've read!!I just read the funnest blog in the whole world! These are my Craftsy block of the month blocks. You can't see them so well. I just laid them on my living room floor and took some quick snaps with my cell phone. There are twenty blocks. I finished all twenty in the 10 months...on time. Right on time. The first for me!
The beginning of November we are going to add sashing and borders. I don't know how I am going to arrange them. Not the way I have them here. I ordered pink chevron (2 yards for sashing and 7 yards of some bold fabric for the borders and backing. I'm kind of worried about such bold color for the border and backing, but it's too late, so it was meant to be! The gal who I am friends with on "The Quilting Board", she ordered some subdue blue color for the back. Now, she was thinking the right way. Why didn't I do that?
Now, check out that site and laugh out loud!!!
The first one was custom quilted. She is awesome! She doesn't back tack at the beginning and ending of her quilting. She hand knots the thread. How great is that? So, if I wanted to put them in a show, they would be perfect for it. Not that I'd ever do that to myself. Have someone else tell me what they thought of my quilting. Never in a million years.
My first quilt is a modern quilt. I'm taking a class in modern quilting from www.craftsy.com and love the teacher and her methods so much that I bought both of her books. She's pretty simplistic. This wasn't from her class. I did this about 9 months ago, before I even thought of doing modern quilting but was beginning to like it.
It is totally square. I've never done a square quilt before. So, I guess it can be used for a small lap quilt. I might try and find somewhere to hang it. Once you see the quilting on it, you'll understand why I want to show it off. Okay, here's the quilting.
In each block she has a different design. Some are so cool, but won't show up because of all the colors in the fabric. So, I had to choose just a few and they weren't even the best. What I like the most about the quilt was how she drew the straight boxes between the boxes...in the sashing.
All of this shows what a steady hand she has. I know she draws it on first, but she, you can be wobbly or go off the line very easily. Not she. She is known for her custom work.
Oh, and she only charged me $97.00 for quilting this whole quilt. I know it had to take her a few days to do this. I know it had to!! There is just so much work involved.
Okay, on to my second one, my favorite quilt.
It's my Block of the Month Civil War Quilt. Every month I received two blocks to do and I stayed on top of this. Every other block of the month club block is still in different aspects: some I have all the blocks and haven't even started; some I've started and have become far behind; some I have all of the blocks but only have a few done, etc. But this one I loved because I love stars (even though I hate those dastardly flying geese so much) and each month I received two blocks that were identical to the two from the month before. They were two stars within a star blocks. Well, my flying geese looked so crappy and I had to fudge when I sewed the points, so I wouldn't lose them. I would have to sew 1/8" instead of 1/4" a lot of the time, but I didn't lose a single point. In fact, my long armer told my local quilt shop owner that I was one of the best quilters that she knew!!! Shocked the hell out of me. She was so impressed by my quilts, she told her. She said that I do a very good job sewing. I was speechless. I thought I was not an advanced quilter, by any means and, more like an advanced beginner, but she said that my stitching is so professional. My friend, Dawn, who owns the quilt shop, went on and on about how much the long armer was impressed by my sewing. She told me that she never says that about anyone else. Embarrassing!! I felt like a fraud.
Before I turn in my quilts, I clip all my threads and pull all the stray threads on the quilt. I iron it properly. I always jazz up the back some and iron it very well, also. But to be told that I'm a very good seamstress is unbelievable to me. My sister was an exceptional seamstress. Her quilts were entered into contests and fairs. She was the expert. She taught me. I was the kid sister who could never live up to my older sister.
My sister died in 2003 at age 53...way too young. My mom died when I was 26 and my sister kind of became my mom. So, when I lost my sister, I think I grew up a lot. I felt like I came out of her shadow. She baked bread that was perfect. She made rolls to die for. She cooked everything excellently. She was a 5th grade teacher and every kid wanted her to be their teacher. She even taught me. We would go on rides to different towns to quilt shops and there would be a lesson involved. I loved it! At her funeral, they had to have it in an auditorium with a balcony because over 500 people showed up. She was much loved and respected. Recently, a girl who graduated from college, did her outtake paper on my sister and how she, as a teacher, had affected this girl's life. Wow!!!! See, my sister was perfect. And then there was me. My sister didn't ever rebel. She and my mom were best friends. They cooked and baked together. They went grocery shopping together. They listened to music together. They watched old movies together. They talked about adult things together. I was out playing with the neighborhood kids, getting dirty, floating down the creek in an inner tube, playing baseball, hide and seek, beating up the boy next door, etc. And that was before I started to rebel. My sister read Shakespeare. She listened to classical music. We both took piano lessons. She kept it up. I only took them for a few years and changed to guitar lessons, the first of my rebellion. We both read constantly. Only she read the classics. All the classics. Not me. I was four years younger than she. So I read fun kids books. And then when I grew up, I read all non-fiction books. I wanted to know about everything, so I would go to the library and get a book on everything, like...hair plugs. This was in the 80s. Right when men started getting hair plugs. I wanted to know where they came from and how they put them in and how they grew. I started learning about everything I wondered about. My sister always thought I should become a detective because I am so curious. Well, I did do some detective work and found out who killed a gal. Never went to the police about it. Too afraid to. They arrested the wrong guy. He was found guilt and went to prison for a year and was released and they just dropped the case totally. I know who did it. The person who did it doesn't know I know they did it. Otherwise, I'd be scared to death. I believe this person killed one or two other people after this. I'm not sure on that, so I couldn't ever accuse them of any other crimes but this one. This one is called "The Candy Cane Park Killing". It was a horrific killing. I saw the girl up close who was killed. The policeman asked me to step back, so I went back home. That's all I'm going to say about it. This is so far off the subject of my two new quilts. How'd I get here? Okay, back to my second quilt.
It's a Civil War quilt. I did two blocks a month for six months and then I was sent different parts for six months. I was sent the sashing, then a border, then 4 blocks for the one border, then another border, then 4 more blocks for the second border, etc. The blocks were stars, also. It is a starry quilt. I named it "Starry, starry night" because of Vincent Van Gough's (sp?) very popular painting by the same name. And I love Vincent so much. I have two coffee table books of his paintings. I named my dog after him: Vinny or Vincent.
Here's some pictures. One thing I want to explain is that the pictures do not do it justice. It is so pretty in real life. No, I haven't done the binding on it yet, or the other one, or 7 other of my quilts. I am aspiring to bind these 9 quilts within the next year, all by myself. I don't care if I machine bind them, just that I get them bound. Usually I send them to someone to bind them for me (for shame), but the guilt and money ($35-45) is too much for me. So, I am keeping up on my free Craftsy block of the month club, and have to make a baby blanket for my favorite girlfriend, my niece, Sarah, but I will do no other sewing but binding after the BOMs and baby blanket. Oops. I'm taking a class this Saturday and making a quilt. So, I guess after I make that quilt I will do no more sewing until the binding is done. Then, after I bind all 9 quilts, I will resume my sewing again. And making my quilts. Which is all I do.
You can tell by the individual photos that the quilt is quite bright and cheerful, but when I take it as a whole, it looks washed up. Don't know why that is. Probably because I use my cellphone. I need to buy a nice camera. Maybe I'll ask for one for Christmas. I bought a camera for $100 but it took the same kind of photos as my cell phone does, plus it was harder to work with, so I just went back to using my cell phone. I want a nice camera like the ones I see on the nice blogs.
I use to have a really nice camera in 1982. It cost $400 back then, so you know it was nice. I can't even remember the brand name...Olympic? Olympia?, but it was the best money could buy. I took classes and had telephoto lenses and learned tricks to taking photos. I was really into it. My kids were small. My daughter wasn't even in school at the time. I drove an old VW van and didn't own a winter coat. But I had a good camera and the classes were taken from the photography shop in town, so they'd develop my pictures very inexpensively, plus sell my the film cheaply, so I could afford it.
Well, when my daughter started first grade, I had to sell it to pay for school clothes that year. It about killed me selling it. I used that camera almost daily. But, I wanted my kids to have nice clothes for school. And you know what, I never did buy myself a winter coat. I lived in Klamath Falls, Oregon. High altitutde with lots of deep snow and cold winters. I wore sweaters. I couldn't afford a coat. The next spring, my ex husband was in a soccer league, (he could afford a soccer ball and cleats though) and after a game, some man left his winter coat. We took it to about 6 games looking for its owner, but never found him. Well, it became my new winter coat for many, many years. It was ugly green and way too big. I had to roll the sleeves up about three times. It went below my knees. It was so ugly, but it was free and that, I could afford. I don't know why I didn't go to Salvation Army. I always hated that coat. I would only wear it out of desperation...when I was freezing...when we'd go sledding or chopping down our Christmas tree, or to work at 3 am in the morning. I had three jobs back then to try to make ends meet. The good ol' days. Barely making it from paycheck to paycheck. And then your kids wanting every toy on TV.
My kids were good about that. They only got toys on Christmas and one on their birthday. We made a big deal about their birthdays. That day, I'd take both of them to the grocery store and let them each pick out any kind of surgary cereal they wanted. I wouldn't let them eat sugary cereal, so they would go for the best stuff there was. And they were allowed to eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks as long as it lasted, which was maybe 2 days. Then, the birthday child would choose what we did for the day. The whole day was about them. We didn't have birthday parties where we invited their friends. It was just the family. Usually we'd go to the caves down in southern Oregon and explore for the day or Annie always wanted to go to Captain Jack's Stronghold. It was a lava bed where the (I can't remember the tribe) indians fought off the army way back when. Some places were 30 feet high and it had hiding spots and a walkway thru the lava. It was multi-level. It was fun for all of us. It took hours to go all around it. The kids would run ahead and hide from us and jump out at us. It was so much fun. I'd always bring snacks for the day. We never ate out at restaurants. Never. Couldn't afford to. Not even McDonald's. But they loved their birthdays the best. We enjoyed the birthday day and night. It was so positive and fun.
This year, my son, Cabel, is turning 35 on September 30th and I'm making him homemade jerky. It's going to cost me $70 to buy the round steak. I am going to send him a huge bag of it. Now that they are getting older, I'm not doing too much for their birthdays or Christmas. Usually I send them a quilt, but I think they each have about 10 quilts, so I need to stop that for a while. Last year, I sent them Visa cards before Christmas, so they could buy presents for their significant others, or whatever they wanted to do with the money. They both really liked that. So, I am going to do it again this year. I remember at Christmas, wishing my Dad would send me some money to help me to buy my kids some presents. Never happened, but always wished he would. So, now I think I will help my kids at Christmas. I know how much it helps.
Okay, this is suppose to be about quilting and I'm way off course. I haven't even posted since the beginning of August. That's because I haven't been quilting. I'm taking a class next Saturday. That's to get me back into quilting. I just haven't had the desire. First time this has happened since I started quilting. Usually I can't wait to sew. Now, I go in my quilting room and look around a little and leave. I was going to try and rearrange it and clean it up and make more room. Empty the closet of a lot of things I don't need, but didn't really get around to it. I dusted in there and that was it. I want the closet empty, so I can buy or build shelves to store my fabric. I would like shelves with wire racks. About 5 shelves going halfway across my closet. My closet is as long as my bedroom is. It's very long. But I have so much "stuff" on the floor in there. Purses. Extra sewing machines. Expensive candles. Parts to my Kirby vacuum cleaner (which I can take out and put with my Kirby - just thought that up), boxes - in case I have to send fabric when I have a giveaway or something to my kids, big tub of fabric and homemade rag dolls in different stages of being made, and a little bit of everything. I have no place else to put most of it. Under my long tables in my sewing room is plum full, so unless I put that stuff outside in our storage shed, it has to stay there. And then, I went through a lot of my clothes hanging up and got rid of the really small shirts that I knew would go out of style by the time I could ever fit into them again.
I gained weight about 2 1/2 years ago. Right when my dad was getting very sick. My thyroid quit working on me and I didn't know it and I found ice cream and gained a bit of weight. Well, I went to my doctor and was weighed. I turned away from the scales and told the nurse not to tell me how much I weighed. Then I started on the Adkins diet. Then I found out I was allergic to gluten. Really allergic!! I went on vacation to Austin, Texas to visit my niece for 5 days and we ate lunch and dinner out and I lost 2 pounds during that time. Very good, especially with eating 2 meals out every day. I was very careful in my choices. I went back to the doctor. I got on the scales. I lost 17 1/2 pounds. Wow!!!!! Now I go in once a month and the nurse weighs me (for free) and I have to lose at least 4 pounds a month, 1 pound a week. I can do that. The diet works well with me. I looked up the symptoms of being allergic to Gluten and yup, I've got them all! Especially getting in a bad mood after inhaling large quantities of gluten - like toast in the morning and I'd be really crabby and my husband would ask what was wrong and I couldn't tell him, but I knew I was crabby but couldn't help it. Since being on this diet, I've been in a great mood every day. I'm happy and have lots of energy. I only eat once a day. Usually in the late afternoon. But I'll snack on homemade jerky if I get the least bit hungry and I do drink coffee in the morning and then change to lots of water. I've done this diet before. I stay on the strict part for years at a time and keep my weight down to a size 6. No problem. That's where I'm heading again. I have 2 brand new pairs of size 6 waiting for me. I have 2 pairs of all the sizes going down to there. I just switched down to a smaller size and it feels good. These are starting to get loose on me. I can take them off without unbuckling them or unzipping them. Did you know that it is really bad for you to eat cereal with fat free milk? It's all carbs. Fat free has lots of carbs in it. If you drink 2%, you get less carbs and some fat and it's better for you mentally and physically. Doctors words.
Okay, enough for now. I made up for lost time. Don't know when I'll blog again. If you read this, please leave a comment so I know that someone read this and it was worth my while. Otherwise I'm thinking of closing this webpage down for good. Thanks for reading. I'll be hoping for any replies and will answer each one.Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08205233421891347959noreply@blogger.com3
